About Community Mobilization and Empowerment
Community Empowerment and Mobilization is FSD's support program to grassroots communities in Uganda. Through this program, FSD Jinja Uganda works directly with grassroots local communities implementing sustainable community programs and projects. We bring both human and non-human resources together to undertake sustainable community-based development activities. The objective is to build the grassroots communities' capacity to gain control over the factors and decisions that shape their lives. FSD supports them in their efforts to increase assets and attributes in order to build partnerships, networks, and develop their voice.
Program Components
Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR)
We conduct CBPR, a partnership approach to research that equitably involves community members, organizational representatives and researchers. Equitable involvement contributes expertise, shared decision-making and ownership of outcomes and actions. The goal is to increase knowledge and understanding of a given phenomenon and then integrate that into interventions and social change, thereby improving the community members’ quality of life.
Community Sensitization and Education
We focus on community-based education to promote learning and social development with individuals and groups in their communities using a range of formal and informal methods. We employ the Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) approach to empower communities to drive the development process forward themselves through identifying and mobilizing existing yet unrecognized assets.
Community Resource mobilization
We engage communities to identify priorities, resources, needs and solutions in a way that promotes representative participation, good governance, accountability and peaceful change. We encourage communities to take advantage of existing local resources before seeking external resources and take ownership of community-based projects.
Program areas of focus
Youth Development
The Youth Development program focuses on working towards solutions with youth to change attitudes towards work and education. It involves working with youth to develop life skills, acquire knowledge and support job creation. The program fosters empowerment to negotiate and explore opportunities for improved transition to adulthood

The Women's Empowerment program focuses on supporting women in overcoming gender inequality and in accessing services and opportunities, such as employment and financial services. The issues prevail partly due to social norms that serve to reinforce the subordinate status of women and downplay their contributions. Environment Sustainability
The Environmental Sustainability program aims to support communities in protecting the environment and increasing knowledge of environmentally friendly strategies. It promotes responsible interaction with the environment to avoid depletion or degradation of natural resources and allow for long term environmental sustainability.
