ICT 4 DEVELOPMENT

Development agencies capacity to integrate knowledge of ICT innovations in community based development projects in a bid of addressing poverty challenges in communities has not been effective in implementation. Minimal data has been availed to show the measure of this gap.

In the process of starting a development project, the four major development parties (the government regulatory agencies, proponents of projects, local communities and special non government organizations) are directly involved. The proponents involved need to be aware of the advantages of using ICTs as well as being sensitive to interests, concerns and rights of people in the community.

ICTs play a significant role promoting entrepreneurship and economic progress in rural areas, contributing to improve the competitiveness of agriculture, the quality of life and diversification of the rural economy. (Maxwell C et al , Jan 24th 2018) Uganda’s information technology and technology enabling services industry is at an early stage of its development. As a result, little data is available on the industry, such as the number of employees and the skill set available. ( https://www.ugandainvest.go.ug/ict-sector-profile-2/). Uganda is ranked 110th of 144 surveyed countries effectively taking advantage of ICTs by the world Economic Forums Networked Readiness index 2013, (Benat et al, 2013 World Economic Forum) thus the need for public study, sensitization, empowerment and funding in area of ICT.

The lack of understanding of ICT innovation; the lack of ability to relate ICTs in community development projects; lack of personal motivation to start ICT projects and the lack of knowledge about the rights to own and utilize ICT resources to sustain livelihoods are a reason why ICTs have not been effectively utilized as tools in addressing poverty in Uganda.

Reason to participate in ICT4D Projects

Engaging in ICT4D projects will challenge you in finding ways of establishing mechanisms through which different development stakeholders can efficiently adopt or integrate aspects of ICT innovations in community based development project implementation in a bid of alleviating poverty in rural communities. Through conducting research studies, you will generate new knowledge about  the existing development ICT gaps for appropriate integration of new ICT innovation. The objective is for you to plan and design suitable and relevant tech systens and mobile applications which compliment different development actions by development agencies in community development. The mission is to maximize positive impact in the communities they serve.
